The Journey of Terence Addey Adams

“Education laid the foundation, but determination, mentorship, and continuous learning shaped the journey.”

When I completed my Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at BlueCrest College in 2017, I was already serving in the Ghana Police Service, with a growing passion for using technology to address real-world challenges in policing and criminal investigations. My ambition was to bridge the gap between conventional investigative methods and emerging technologies, applying the knowledge acquired at BlueCrest to strengthen criminal investigations, digital evidence analysis, and public safety.

What followed has been a journey of continuous learning, resilience, professional growth, and opportunities extending far beyond Ghana’s borders.

A Graduation Message That Resonated

One particularly memorable moment from our graduation ceremony in March 2018 was a message delivered by the then Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey, who challenged BlueCrest graduates to apply their technological knowledge and skills to help Ghana combat cybercrime.

As a serving police officer, that message resonated deeply with me. It reflected the very reason I had pursued Information Technology: to contribute meaningfully to addressing the technological challenges confronting modern law enforcement.

Looking back, I find it particularly fulfilling that what was presented to us as a national challenge has become central to my professional journey.

Today, I serve with the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service, where I lead digital forensic activities and serve as the Technical Manager of the Digital Forensics Laboratory. My work involves supporting complex criminal investigations, examining digital evidence, and strengthening technical capabilities within law enforcement. That progression, from listening to a call to help combat cybercrime to actively contributing to that mission, remains one of the most meaningful aspects of my career.

The BlueCrest Foundation and a Mentor’s Lasting Impact

Beyond the academic knowledge I acquired, BlueCrest also introduced me to people and opportunities that significantly influenced my professional development. One individual whose encouragement I will always remember is the late Dr. Eva Esther Shalin, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Collaboration at BlueCrest University College, Ghana.

Dr. Shalin shared and recommended the Mandela Washington Fellowship opportunity to me, encouraging me to pursue what would become a defining experience in my leadership journey.

In 2018, I was selected for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, undertaking leadership studies at Arizona State University in the United States.

The experience broadened my understanding of leadership, public service, and institutional development, while connecting me with emerging leaders from across Africa.

I remain deeply grateful to Dr. Shalin for that encouragement. Her gesture taught me an enduring lesson: sometimes, a single opportunity shared by someone who believes in your potential can change the direction of your life.

Her legacy remains a reminder of the profound impact educators and mentors can have beyond the classroom.

From Continuous Learning to Professional Leadership

Building on my academic foundation at BlueCrest, I subsequently pursued a Master of Science in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity at GIMPA, complemented by internationally recognised certifications in digital forensics and ethical hacking in China, Mauritius, and Czech Republic.

The journey has not been without challenges. Working in a specialised field where technology evolves rapidly, often amid limited resources and increasing investigative demands, requires adaptability, innovation, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

These experiences have strengthened my belief that challenges should not define our limitations but inspire us to develop the capabilities needed to overcome them.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of becoming an INTERPOL Certified Instructor, contributing to law enforcement training and capacity-building initiatives in Ghana and other African countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

My professional contributions have also earned recognition, including the Ghana Police Service Cybercrime Investigator of the Year Award and a Director-General’s Special Award.

While these milestones are personally fulfilling, my greatest satisfaction comes from applying my expertise to support criminal investigations, protect vulnerable people, mentor colleagues, and strengthen digital forensic capabilities.

A Message to BlueCrest Students and Alumni

Reflecting on my journey, I have come to appreciate that a university degree is not the destination; it is the foundation upon which we build our future.

To current BlueCrest students and fellow alumni, my message is simple: remain curious, embrace mentorship, invest in continuous learning, and never allow your present circumstances to limit your ambitions.

Opportunities may come through unexpected encounters, a lecturer’s encouragement, or a challenge that pushes you beyond your comfort zone. What matters is your willingness to recognise and pursue them.

I remain grateful to BlueCrest for the academic foundation, relationships, and opportunities that have contributed to my journey. The message delivered at our graduation and the encouragement of the late Dr. Shalin continue to remind me that education has its greatest value when it translates into service and meaningful impact.

As I continue working to strengthen digital forensic capabilities and mentor the next generation of professionals, I remain guided by one principle:

“Success is not merely about how far you rise, but how many others can rise because you chose to grow.”
